Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Review

By Unknown 0 comments

With the combined might of quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chip, 1GB of RAM and a 12-core GeForce GPU, the Transformer Prime makes other tablets look about as powerful as a ZX Spectrum. And all in a chassis that's just 8.3mm thin. That's half a millimetre thinner than an iPad 2.

When it lands in January the Transformer Prime will be running Android's current tablet OS, Honeycomb. However, Asus promises the Prime will get an Ice Cream Sandwich update as soon as possible, which should cause the Android army to salivate in anticipation.

With 32GB of storage onboard the Prime is twice as roomy as the original base-level Transformer. There's also a microSD slot on the side, plus a pre-loaded portal for cloud storage. There's no 3G, but you do get GPS - useful if you fancy blocking your windscreen and using the Prime as a comically over-sized sat-nav.

As well as boosting the battery from 12 to 18 hours, the bundled Mobile Dock adds a QWERTY keyboard, a touch-pad, one USB 2.0 port and an SD card reader, turning your Transformer Prime into something resembling a slim, low-voltage Ultrabook.

The Prime keeps the original Transformer's 10.1inch, 1280x800 screen, with support for 10-finger multi-touch. The rear camera gets a sizeable boost from 5MP to 8MP, although the front-facer remains unchanged at 1.2MP.
